SAXA

THE MAN BEHIND THE GOLDEN HORN

Born in sunny Clarendon Jamaica, in the 1930’s Lionel Augustus Martin became the man with the golden horn AKA SAXA. known and loved by the locals of birmingham. before becoming famous with his unique  instantly recognisable sound  with Ska/ punk/dance fusion band we all know as

The beat

As featured at the Herbert Gallery from 28th May to 12th September as part of the 2 Tone Lives and Legacies.

2Tone era

Saxa’s muscial influence on the UK ‘s 80’s Two Tone era could never be in doubt. Arguably, having been on the  Jamacian Ska Scene the first  time round, playing  alongside Prince Buster, Laurel Aiken and Desmond Decker, to name but a few.  Saxa’s knowledge of ska, rhythm and blues, undeniably give the band the beat it’s edge.

Saxa was  a larger then life presence’s with an exclusive style of dress, he would light up any room he entered, but it was the stage, playing his Horn to his many fans,  he was in his element.. often remaining on stage to the delight of his fans long after after the beat’s encore.

The Beat was signed to the Two Tone label in 1979.. producing an outstanding very Intune with time cover of Smoky Robinson , classic Tears of Clown.  The first of many beat songs  to show case the exquisite tenor sax melodies of  Saxa the man behind the golden horn
